A Brand New Holiday

,

You have probably never heard of the holiday called Dan Day… Because Mikhaila and I just invented it yesterday!  After celebrating many holidays and hearing about who invented them and why, it made us want to invent a holiday for everyone to celebrate.

Here are some of the holidays we have experienced…  See if you can guess what they are!

Dan Day is celebrated on the first day of each school term and I hope it will be celebrated all over the world. Dan stands for “Dawning of a new”, and is meant to celebrate a new term and to wish one another good luck.

On Dan Eve, everyone lights a small candle in the evening.  At midnight, the candles are extinguished and everyone says “Happy Dan Day!” and wishes each other good luck. The small candle represents a phoenix. When a phoenix dies, it burns, rises from the ashes, and has a fresh start, or a new life. For us, on Dan Day, we receive a fresh start to a new school term.

On Dan Day, everyone hands out paper origami figures that have “Happy Dan Day”, or “good luck” written on them.  The origami figures can be any shape or size.

If you have given out all of your origami figures, don’t panic. Just shake hands and wish the person a “Happy Dan Day” and “good luck”!

Dan Day all started when Mikhaila was writing one of her blog posts that involved Vietnamese instruments. I was sitting off to the side and heard her say “dan day.” A dan day is a string instrument like a guitar, but I misunderstood her and thought she meant a holiday of some sort.  Then, we got the idea to make our own holiday, and Dan Day was born.

Dan Day is one of my new favorite holidays.  We would really appreciate if you could spread the word about Dan Day so it can be celebrated all over the world.  Thank you!

Hey, why don’t you invent a holiday too?

Happy Dan Day and good luck!

    1. Hi!

      Happy Dan Day!

You don’t need to be at school to celeebrate it! 🙂

      Good luck!

  2. This sets a new high in creativity for you, girl! I love this! The entire concept is a hoot! And also a refreshing way to start a new term. I have always liked any excuse for a ‘fresh start’ and this sound most sensible.
By the way, how long did it take to get all of that coloured powder off of you guys?

    1. Hi!

I am glad you like the idea of Dan day!

By the way, the colour from Holi still has not come out of my clothing, my mom’s hair is still pink and purple even after getting her hair done! 🙂

  3. HAPPY Dan Day Zoe…what a great idea. I am sure anyone with the name of Dan will especially like a holiday named after them! Hope you had a good March break. Travel safely. Love Teta Doreen xoxo

    1. Hi!

You are right! Sharing the name of the holiday would probably be like a second birthday! 🙂

  4. Happy Dan Day, Zoe and Mikhaila, and Mom and Dad too,
Thanks for sharing memories of all the special holidays, and for creating such a grand new holiday that wishes good luck! I will wish everyone I see today, “Happy Dan Day.” Love, Baba

    1. Hi!

Thank you for commenting! If you say happy Dan day to everyone, if they have not read the blog, please be sure to tell them what it is because otherwise they might get really confused! 🙂

  5. Happy Dan Day, to you and your family….safe travels

    1. Hi!

Thank you for your good wishes and Happy Dan day to you also! 🙂

  6. Hi, Zoe, I am a bit behind with my reading, so here it is: Happy Dan Day to you all. I will mark it in my calendar. So would that be first school day in September or every first school day after a break? Love and Hugs

    1. Hi!

Happy Dan day to you too! It is celebrated on the first day back to school after a break (summer, March and Christmas break). 🙂
