Fabulous Food in Tanzania!

The food in Tanzania has been surprisingly lovely! We found the meals to be simple and very flavourful.

For breakfasts we always had fresh fruit like mangoes and papayas and we were lucky to have chocolate chapatti pancakes while on Zanzibar!

Afternoon drinks often included chocolate banana milkshakes, passion fruit juice or fresh coconut milk.

Almost every night we had fresh fish for dinner – grilled with some of the local spices and presented beautifully with flowers. The side dish of rice always had a special flavor as coconut milk was used to prepare it….something we will try upon our return.

We really enjoyed the spices of the island as it livened up the different dishes.  Some of the most famous on the island are: cinnamon, cardamon, cloves, cumin, pepper, saffron and garlic.  We even drank spiced tea everyday….it was really neat!

Overall, lots of fruit, fish and spices….delicious!

  1. Kat, the photos are great! I love the presentation! The rice is presented in such a lovely way and I like how they have flowers in their presentation! Love, Mom

    1. HI There,
From now on, we will use fresh flowers to decorate all of our meals – it makes everything look so nice! We just wish we had the same climate as Tanzania!

Mmmmmm, chocolate chapati pancakes, with mangoes! Bring it on!

    1. We all agree – the chocolate pancakes and the mangoes were delicious! A great way to start the day!

      Cheers,
      Kat:)

  3. Love all the different types of fish you photographed! Looks delicious. Travel Safely! Doreen xoxo

    1. It was neat because the menu changed everyday depending on what the fishermen were able to catch….late in the afternoon they would let us know what was on the menu for the evening.

      Fun and delicious!

They certainly know how to present food! And it all looks so very healthy! Having spent many months here in the southern US, so much of the food is what I like to call “deep fried lard” .It is a real challenge to eat well, so we eat at home! You have had such extraordinary and diverse experiences food-wise, and the photos show that for the most part, the food was quite health-full! How your lives will change when you get home! Jill will be here Feb 4 – 11 and we will try at least one of your recipes …Will you be sending more recipes?

    1. Hi There,
We always try to eat as healthy as possible – some days/locations are better than others. It can be difficult to eat well when in hotels which is why we like to use VRBO/Air BNB to rent apartments so we have our own kitchens. There are not as many places like this in Tanzania…I’m sure it will catch on later.
As for recipes -stay tuned! We’re in India now and our CS host Anju is chef extraordinaire! We are hoping for cooking lessons from her.
      Enjoy your time with Jill!

VRBO/Air BNB ? what are these? You probably ave them in your intro, but refresher please? Thanks, Herta

        1. Hi There,
VRBO (vacation rentals by owners) and Air BNB (Bed and Breakfasts) are basically sites you can go to to book entire apartments, rooms, tree houses – whatever type of lodging you can think of. We prefer this style of accommodation to hotels as we get more room, plus kitchen facilities for the same price. We also prefer living in a residential area so we feel part of the community.
          Cheers!

  5. Hi, Katina, I enjoyed this food posting very much. It all looks very healthy and colourful. Since I love fish, I think I could finally get “my fill”. Just as I was going to ask about spices, I came to your list. All of these spices bring out the taste of the dishes. I loved the presentations.

    1. Hi There,
The food was delicious and very fresh – we were lucky to benefit from the wonderful fishermen we met and the great cook at our bungalow. Now that we are in India – we are learning even more about spices!
      It’s all very exciting!
      Cheers,
      Kat:)
