Blarney Castle – Kissing the Blarney Stone

I’m not sure about you, but I always visualized the Blarney Stone as being a huge rock in the middle of a field surrounded by tourists.  Maybe looking something like this (but with more tourists): Rock in a field But what the Blarney Stone actually looks like is this: Location of the Blarney Stone As you may have read in Mikhaila’s post, legend has it that kissing the Blarney Stone gives the gift of eloquence.  For instance, Winston Churchill was said to have kissed the Blarney Stone just after being elected Prime Minister…before he made any of his most famous speeches. What’s the difference between “Blarney” and “Baloney”?  Here are a couple of examples to try and explain the concept: Baloney… is when a man tells a 50-year old woman that she is so beautiful that she can’t be a day over 18. Blarney … is when a man asks a woman her age so that he can remember the exact moment when women are their most beautiful! When in Ireland, kiss the Blarney Stone!  After climbing 100 steps through some very narrow, curved staircases to the top of the castle, we made our way through the queue towards the stone.  Here are the steps to kiss the stone:

  1. Sit down with your back to the Blarney Stone
  2. Lie back (there’s a gent to help you out).  At this point your upper body is hanging out over a 2 foot space between the floor of the tower and the wall.  It’s a long way down, but there are bars in the way so you cannot fall!
  3. Reach your hands up over your head as you’re lying back – there are two hand-holds you can use.
  4. Arch your back, kiss the stone!
