Beijing Circus!

No visit to China is complete without visiting a Circus! China is famous for it’s acrobats and we couldn’t resist the opportunity to see a great performance while in Beijing.

The show is performed a number of times throughout the day so we decided to meet the family from France and enjoy the show together in the early evening. Unlike the circus in Cambodia, we had assigned seats in the first balcony and a perfect view of the stage. We couldn’t believe some of the tricks so we were glad we are able to share them on our blog.

We were overwhelmed with the beautiful sets and costumes – especially for the ladies. It was everything we thought China would be. The show was a balance of beauty and strength.  The men tended to focus upon masculinity, while the ladies were elegant and pure grace -but they were also strong too!

The show started with the ladies from Imperial China.  The costumes were gorgeous and everything was very regal.

From there, the gents performed by jumping through different sizes of hoops with a backdrop of the Forbidden City.

The ladies then returned and did an interesting balancing act involving multiple umbrellas and spinning.  All of which was accompanied by beautiful costumes, music and sets.

Then the angry male farmers came on and juggled their way through the revolution.  It was interesting to see how the history is incorporated into all of their acts.

Not to be outdone by the angry farmers – the next presentation was incredible as the ladies performed and did balancing acts that were beyond belief!  Also the set design of the lotus was simply stunning!

The next presentation was a show of amazing strength as two men walked up and down stairs with their hands.  The music really made this very exciting!

The following act was with another 2 males who were very energetic and ran through what looked like connected hamster wheels. They would blindfold themselves and walk through the wheels.  I was honestly holding my breath the entire time!

The ladies were next with an incredible show of balance and grace while riding bicycles.  I told the girls they were not to try this act at home!

The final act of the night as when the male performers rode their motorcycles inside of large sphere.  It was very exciting and probably one of my favourite acts overall…now Oliver wants to get a motorcycle for sure!

The Beijing Circus was everything we expected and more!  It was pure entertainment with incredible athletic acts that showcased the skill, strength and grace of the performers.  If you are ever in China – make sure to see this show – it’s amazing!

I have been amazed at all the performances you have seen in other countries as well. what is intriguing is the fact that the performances seem to be happening all of the time. There is a lot of employment in the dance and acrobatic industries in many of the countries you visited. I am also amazed that you can take such great photographs at all of these events. Holy Doodle indeed!
