Another Brick in the Wall

On our trip we have seen a lot of walls. Here are just a few examples we have seen:

  • the remains of the Berlin wall
  • the huge wall between Palestine and Israel
  • the one between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Although we have seen many, none of them can be compared to the Great Wall of China!

As we made our way to the chair lift with another Canadian couple, excitement was building inside of me. I couldn’t believe it! We were going to walk along the Great Wall of China! We got to the chair lift and soared up into the air!

That was where we saw our first view. It was incredible!  We stepped onto one of the seven man-made Wonders of the World and started walking. It was huge!

It's huge!
It’s huge!

Here are some photos from the Great Wall.

Some of the steps were almost half the size of me and others were about 2 inches tall.

At one part, the steps were even on a slope!

Along the wall there are many towers.  Inside the first one, the walls were draped in white fabric and covered with signatures. We signed our names and wrote “globalfieldtrip” on behalf of all of us.

Through research, I found out some interesting facts about the Great Wall:

  • The building started in 475 BC;
  • It took 2000 years to build across the border of China;
  • It was built to protect the people from their enemy, the Huns;
  • 300,000 soldiers and 500,000 commoners built it- that is almost the population of San Fransisco;
  • They used bricks, limestone and tiles to build it;

I also found out the measurements:

  • Length- 7242 km (longer than the distance between New York, to California by about 1000 miles);
  • Width- 15-30 feet (can fit two cars on it);
  • Height- about 25 feet tall;

We walked along the wall for six kilometres and to finish the trip off, we went on a luge down the side of the mountain. My only question is who needs to be in Canada to sled?

Unfortunately, the whole experience came to an end way too quickly. Time flies when you’re having fun!

Now we have been to 4 of the man-made Wonders of the World: The Colosseum, Petra, The Taj Mahal and the Great Wall. I can’t wait to investigate and see more!

  1. Wow! What a wonderful experience for you to walk on the Great Wall of Chins! Also, that sure was a fun experience to ride in the great sled ride of China! Now you will have to investigate to see if there are any larger slides down the mountain. Thanks for the great history lesson. Love, Baba
